Rare 18th century Antique Hudson Valley NY Bronze Mortar & Pestle Hand Carved Lid Provenance This important mortar & pestle has a rare hand scribed pine fitted lid. It has its original untouched patina. This mortar & pestle has had 4 owners over its 250 years. It has been in our family for over 50 years. Prior to then it was in the Paul Felice of Locust Valley NY collection. It was aquired by Felice who purchased it from the Kimball estate in 1948. The early history was found on the attached card. It was stated that the estate of the early settler was that of Cartwright which was George Cartwright, a mapmaker and civil engineer. He created the early maps of Sing Sing New York. George was born in London in 1785 and died in1867. The detailed pine lid measures 5.5" diameter, the pestle measures 7.5" long and the mortar is 4" high. The top diameter measure 4 3/8" and the base measures 3 3/8". The set is unsigned.
