Description

Fantastic maker marked brass or bronze mortar from the 18th or 19th century or earlier. I cannot find an equal anywhere. All of my research has turned up much later models. It is stamped with No. 19 and looks to be a gothic I H or H I superimposed. Just a wonderful early English or American piece. I would trust you don't have one like this in your collection. Pestle is long gone. One may find one to complete the display. It stands 3 and a half inches high by 3 and a half inches at the widest part, top. Weighs approximately 3 and a half pounds. It does chime like a bell when struck. Just a lovely medical, pharmaceutical piece from the time when things were very different.
