Large Mortar and Pestle Set from lignum Vitae Wood; Oxidized – c. 1850.
An exceptionally large and heavy mortar and pestle set. The mortar is mostly straight, turned and spiral carved, on a wide, flat, base of support. It has a low center of gravity. The lignum vitae wood itself is thick in a milk chocolate brown color. The pestle is a perfect match.
Note:
I have been an avid collector of mortar and pestle sets since the middle 1990’s, lignum vitae and bronze only. This particular lignum vitae mortar and pestle set is a favorite because of its immensity and low center of gravity. The ideal mortar and pestle set on board of a large sailing ship like a clipper.
Condition:
Antique original mortar from thick lignum vitae wood in very good condition. Oxidation with desirable age cracks. Its bottom side has four shallow pin holes. Very durable. Clean and dry. The pestle is a perfect match.
