Description
Baroque period heavy bronze mortar and pestle set, French or Northern Italian - c. 1650. A true set; the mortar and its pestle. This heavy set is distinguished by its antiquity, first half 17th century. The bronze itself is thick gauge and consequently it is very heavy. Its surface is smooth to the touch from handling and wear over the course of literally hundreds of years. Each member of the mortar and pestle is properly proportioned and indistinguishable in the context of its beautifully patinated bronze. The molded bronze mortar has a flared rim over a tapered body with ornate detail in the sense of four (4) vertical knopped ribs. The molded bronze pestle is double ended. This set is very much a prototype baroque period bronze mortar and pestle set likely either from Northern Italy or France.Dimensions:
Mortar diameter of flared rim about 5-5/8". Mortar height about 3-5/8". Pestle length about 7-5/8".
