    Description

ANTIQUE CAST IRON MORTAR AND PESTLE
Typical of 19th century cast iron mortars, this one has a squat shape and is wider (6-3/4'' diameter at the top) than tall 6". The bottom has a 6" diameter, the pestle is 10-1/2" long and both together weigh 16.6 pounds.
It was likely cast sometime between 1840-1870 as it shows both cove and quarter round moldings on the base and top, and a ribbed design below a raised semi circle (scallop) design around the entire mortar. It was cast in a one part mold with a ground off sprue mark on the bottom. The pestle was cast in a two part mold and shows a seam mark along the length on either side.
Both pieces show traces of both blue and green paint which was a later addition.
This is an exceptionally nice 19th century Mortar and Pestle for your collection or to use as intended!
