Description
Antique, c. 1900 - 1930 pharmacy, apothecary, chemist, laboratory stone mortar with matching stone and wooden pestle. Mortar is marked with number 5 and measures 8 1/4" diameter and the pestle is marked 7 and measures 9 3/4" long. The wood handle on the pestle is smooth and fine grained. Both are in original as found condition and have not been excessively cleaned, restored, varnished or tampered with beyond dusting.
I have owned this set for almost 20 years and bought it in Southern California antique store. I've enjoyed it as a decorative set and never used them. They have been stored inside a closed cabinet. I do not know their origin.
On the bottom, the mortar is stamped:
Warranted T.M.S. & Co. Acid Proof 5
Thomas Maddock & Sons Trenton, N.J.
In excellent condition with the exception of a small chip in the pour, as seen in the photo. A fine mortar and pestle that are as elegant as they may be useful. No doubt they would serve the chef, pharmacist or chemist for decades, if not centuries to come. Made with a quality and craftsmanship unrivaled by contemporary standards.
