    Description

    We are happy to offer for your consideration a French stone mortar. It measures 9 wide 5 tall, This French Mortar was used for grinding herbs, grain and making compounds. This type of bowl is used in kitchens all over France. This one is very Very heavy and made of solid granite. It is at least from the 1700’s and possibly quite a bit older.
    This is a museum quality piece. It is hard to date it earlier than the 1700s because they made this kind of mortar for hundreds of years. In the 1800s there was more form introduced in France to their mortars and they added the classic ears The projections off of the side of the mortar.
    It is in very good antique condition with no cracks or repairs. A lovely addition to any French country kitchen or garden. It would make a lovely bird watering station as well as a functional kitchen tool. Lots of options for this lovely piece.
