Antique Bronze Mortar Having the Date 1630.
A bronze mortar with lion faces, head handles and garlands.
Impressive vintage bronze mortar with a detailed lion/man face at the center and two large handles shaped as heads. There is the same face on each side.
This mortar, no pestle, is in original condition. It is from an estate in Leelanau County, MI. and the family was from Switzerland. I was told they brought the mortar with them when the family immigrated.
It is highly decorated and oversized. It is approx 8.5” tall x 10” in dia. It weighs approx 20 pounds. It is dated 1630 (MDC XXX). It was probably cast in the 19th century, however, the exact date of its production is unknown. The mortar is in excellent condition and has an attractive patina.
This would make a stunning ice bucket!
