Antique Apothecary Mortar & Pestle. Dark Wood & Rope Handle.

Description

Very rustic looking solid dark wood with an exterior that looks like a small tree trunk, itself, with respective texture. Brim is sculpted so as to make setting the pestle atop without rolling off. Pestle is covered all around with carved thumb print indentations, has a 6 notch primitative star like pattern on the bottom, and has a light shine around it more than the duller mortar. Both appear to have been hand carved from one piece of wood. Both are in excellent condition for their age from being maintained among a collection of antique mortar & pestles. There are no apparent defects other than darkening of the off white pestle rope. Exact age has not been determined. Estimated to have been made in the early 1900-1920. Mortar measures 4" high x almost 4 1/2" at the brim. Pestle measures 7 1/2" long. One previous owner, an apothecary and collector of antique apothecary items.
