A wonderful antique bronze or brass apothecary mortar and pestle, massive in construction. Although both pieces date to at least 19th century, is possible that this is a composite set, each dating to different period. Judging from the fact that all dimensions of the pestle are in inches and appears to be lathe turned, but the pestle is most likely 19th century. The mortar dimensions, however, are neither exact in the English or the Metric systems. The mortar is at least 19th century, and may possibly even be 18th century
.
Mortar is stamped

on the base. No other markings - maker is unknown, although style suggests possible Northern European origin. Please look at photos carefully, they are an inte
gral part of the description and condition.

Excellent antique condition with age appropriate use wear. Beautiful old patina. Not cleaned - left as found.
